Background of the Study

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive issue that disproportionately affects women, particularly those in public and political spheres. Female political aspirants are often subjected to violence, both physical and psychological, as part of the broader societal attempt to suppress their political involvement. This study will examine the impact of gender-based violence on female political aspirants in Zuru Local Government Area, Kebbi State, highlighting the forms of violence and its consequences on women’s political participation and aspirations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Women aspiring to political leadership often encounter various forms of gender-based violence, including threats, intimidation, harassment, and physical violence. In Zuru, the culture of violence against female politicians can deter them from pursuing their aspirations or hinder their political careers. This study aims to understand how gender-based violence impacts the political ambitions of women in Zuru and how it affects their ability to succeed in political endeavors.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of gender-based violence among female political aspirants in Zuru.

  2. To examine the forms of gender-based violence that affect female political aspirants in Zuru.

  3. To evaluate the impact of gender-based violence on the political success and career development of female aspirants.

  4. To recommend strategies for mitigating the effects of gender-based violence on female political aspirants in Zuru.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the forms of gender-based violence that female political aspirants in Zuru experience?

  2. How does gender-based violence affect the political participation and success of female aspirants in Zuru?

  3. What are the social and psychological impacts of gender-based violence on women’s political careers?

  4. How can gender-based violence against female political aspirants be reduced in Zuru?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Gender-based violence significantly hinders the political participation of women in Zuru.

  2. The fear of gender-based violence leads to a reduction in the number of women contesting for political office in Zuru.

  3. Female political aspirants who experience gender-based violence are less likely to succeed in their political campaigns.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will shed light on the challenges faced by female political aspirants in Zuru due to gender-based violence. It will provide valuable information for policymakers, women's rights organizations, and political leaders to address this issue and create safer environments for women to participate in politics.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on female political aspirants in Zuru Local Government Area and their experiences with gender-based violence. Limitations may include the reluctance of women to report violence due to cultural stigmas or fear of retribution.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Gender-Based Violence: Violence directed at individuals based on their gender, often resulting in harm to women, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.

  • Political Aspirants: Individuals who seek to contest for political positions or offices.

Political Career: The professional path of individuals in political leadership roles, including elected and appointed offices
